About Emkaan
Emkaan is an international architectural and engineering practice, shaping context-driven environments through a deep understanding of people, place, and purpose. Founded in Dubai in 2009, the studio works across architecture, interior design, and engineering — delivering each project as a single, considered whole, from first sketch to final handover.

Our Mission
To create spaces that bring joy and ease to the people who live, work, and gather within them — through architecture that listens before it shapes.
Our Vision
To lead in designing environments that are sustainable, functional, and quietly expressive — proof that architecture, at its best, is something you feel before you see.
Our Story
Emkaan began in Dubai in 2009, founded by architect Muhammad Obaid. His early years were spent in Cairo, working on the rehabilitation of Al Darb Al Ahmar — a historic neighbourhood revived under the Aga Khan Trust for Culture. That work taught him to begin every project with the lives that will inhabit it, not the structure that will hold them.
In the seventeen years since, the studio has grown into a multidisciplinary practice working with developers, private clients, hospitality operators, and educational institutions across the UAE, Egypt, and Spain. Across that range, one principle has stayed constant: that good architecture is not noticed first — it is felt.

Every space is experienced in layers — from the physical to the intangible. At Emkaan, we design across all of them.
Architecture is not only the building. It is the air a room holds. The way light moves across a floor at dusk. The quiet of a hallway. The hush of a wall under the hand. The feeling, on entering, that you are precisely where you should be. We treat each of these as part of the work.
01

The Physical
Materiality, proportion, and detail. What you see. What you touch.
02

The Environmental
Light, airflow, and thermal comfort. How a space breathes and responds.
03

The Emotional
The atmosphere a space creates.
Calm, connection, and presence.
04

The Intelligent
Planning, flow, and spatial logic. Every decision intentional.
05

The Intangible
The feeling that cannot be measured.
A quiet sense of belonging.
